We’re back in the upper Midwest for a long weekend to celebrate the wedding of my good college buddy Josh “Strutter” Gordon in Chicago. Only a few hours north is Milwaukee, or actually Pewaukee where Missy’s sister Kim and her family lives, so we made a bit extra drive to see them for a few days. It’s been great for Gus to be around his older cousins, and the situation reminds me much of my trips to Patchogue, NY to see my grandparents and my older cousins, who declared me a disaster area whenever I was around their toys. We took a trip to the Milwaukee Children’s Museum which was our first trip to a kid and parent central nuthouse, but it was amazing seeing all of the kids exploring. Gus enjoyed the padded room for babes, where he got a lot of TLC from a cute twin and her siblings.

Just a few months after my Grandfather Sam passed away, my grandmother followed him this week. After a good fight against Alzheimers, she went peacefully with family surrounding her and hospice care keeping her comfortable. We were all having a nice meal together, which is exactly what she would have wished for us. She taught us how to cook, how to eat and most importantly, set example upon example of how to love. She loved unconditionally, and left all of us with so many memories. This week just a few days before she passed away, I was able to introduce her to her first great-grandson, Gus, who everyone agreed perked her up more than she had in many months. Her eyes followed him around the room, and his laughter and cries provided comic relief for a family suffering from loss. She will be so sadly missed, but lives on in her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

So today we took a day trip to Duluth, MN to see some friends and decided to take advantage of the great snow and warmish weather (almost 30 degrees) and try taking Gus in a backpack loaned to us. Gus took to it like a champ, and bundled up in his new snow suit, enjoyed the crisp sunny air against his face as we took four laps around Hartley Park, one of my favorite Duluth City Parks. The grooming conditions were perfect. Gus stayed awake for two laps and fell asleep for the second two. He awoke in a great mood, so we’ll try it again tomorrow on a more remote ski trail along the N. Shore of Lake Superior. Can’t wait for him to try skiing on his feet in a few years. Also included in the gallery area few pictures of sledding on Sand Lake pulled by his cousin Casey the other day.
The end result of course, was the desired outcome…a good two hour nap (which allowed for an adult cross country ski).
